Public Inquiry
Kim met briefly with Barb W., Angela, Lorri (the security committee) about our call for a public inquiry. We are still not sure where the decision came from for the origin of our request letter, Angela is looking for old security committee minutes.
Kim has spoken to our lawyer who wrote us regarding our involvement with the Public Inquiry. Don Crane has spoken to us regarding the public inquiry, his opinion is that the media attention might be useful. There is a progressive complaint commissioner who is open to changes and might not want to whitewash the investigation. Don has given us an estimate of 20-25 hours of prep time plus one day for appearance at the inquiry which will cost around $4,500. he said that a ceiling is possible. Don is concerned about the effect of not presenting a united front. If there are divisions in the Clinic and they show up at the Inquiry, it could be very detrimental to our case. We don't want the "anti's" getting wind of any problems.
M/S/C That the Board proceed with asking Don Crane to act as legal council, to a maximum of $4,000, at the Public Inquiry into the Parker Case for the Clinic and four complaintants (Marg, Mollie, Barb W, Angela). Carried Unanimously.
Correspondence
- Rosanne's memo on staff communication was circulated. It will be posted.
- Kim received a response from Dominion Directories saying that they're sorry about the confusion and will change the heading in the next directory. They will remove the tag "no information is provided on alternatives to abortions". Kim is to write another letter because they are including non-abortion services under the heading for Abortion Services.
- A letter from the Coalition regarding the retro-pay issue was received. We have agreed to pay the retro amount even though the MOH did not provide us with enough funds. This is no longer an issue.
- Will has written a letter wanting to be included in the Parker meeting on November 15 of the Security committee. Lorri will represent the Board at the security meeting on November 15. Kim will not attend. Don Crane will be invited as will Will and Marg.
- Will has written another letter regarding the constitutional "typo" issue. Lorri wrote to him earlier regarding our position. His latest letter dated Oct. 22, said Lorri did not deal with his concerns about the "typo".
- A letter dated November 6 was also received from Will. He is demanding a general meeting of the membership be called.
- Another letter from Will has been received by Kim regarding "free speech". This letter deals with the Boards earlier decision not to allow him free access to the staff for distribution of his letters. No decision was made on how to deal with these letters.
